Inclusive Parks

Last September, a key discussion took place between Clark Chris Shaw, PCF representative Maylynda, Tiny Steps (a local SEND charity for all children with additional needs), and other parents about the need for inclusive play areas.
The focus was on ensuring accessibility for all children, especially those with additional needs, to fully enjoy playground facilities. After securing funding, we were pleased to be included in the refurbishment of Belmont Play Area, with work set to begin in March 2025.
Co-Production in Action
Cheshire West and Chester Council recently installed a wheelchair swing at Marbury Country Park, marking a milestone in inclusive play. This achievement highlights the power of co-production—where parents, children, authorities, and organisations collaborate from start to finish to meet community needs.
What Co-Production Looks Like
Listening to the Community:
The Council actively engaged parents in discussions. Parents like Charlotte, a mother of a disabled child, contributed to Belmont Park’s plans and felt her ideas were valued.
Collaborating with Experts:
The Council partnered with PiPA PLAY, an organisation dedicated to creating accessible play areas, to assess various playgrounds for inclusivity improvements.
Making Informed Decisions:
PiPA PLAY recommended Marbury Park for a wheelchair swing due to its inclusive facilities. The Council acted on these suggestions, ensuring the right equipment was installed in the best location.
Feedback and Impact
Families like Charlotte’s were thrilled. She shared,
"Providing our children the chance to experience a swing, just like other kids, is profoundly moving."
Her son Oscar, who is non-mobile and non-verbal, spent 30 minutes enjoying the wheelchair swing, and the ease of access made a huge difference for their family.
Laura Clifton also expressed her gratitude:
"It’s wonderful to see progress that will benefit my daughter and other families in our community."
The Importance of Co-Production
Co-production ensures services genuinely meet the needs of those who use them, fostering ownership and inclusion within the community.
A Special Thanks!
Special thanks to Maylinda Gaunt, Laura Clifton, Charlotte Trow, and Tiny Steps for their invaluable contributions. This project demonstrates the positive impact of collaboration between parents, councils, and organisations.
Our PCF representative, Maylinda, will keep parents and the council informed on improvements, including updates on Belmont Park’s inclusivity efforts. Stay tuned!
