A Workshop on Autistic Girls, Masking and PDA

Joanne Southall • December 16, 2024

Key Highlights from the Session

  • Introduction to Autism in Girls: The workshop opened with an overview of how autism manifests in girls, highlighting differences in diagnosis rates and behavioural patterns.
  • Masking: A deep dive into the concept of masking shed light on why many girls remain undiagnosed and the long-term impact of masking on mental health.
  • Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA): Participants learned about the traits of PDA and practical strategies for reducing anxiety and supporting children with PDA in daily life.
  • Case Studies and Q&A: Real-life examples helped to contextualised the theory, and an interactive Q&A session allowed parents to connect the information to their own experiences.

A Collaborative Approach

The session emphasised collaboration between families, schools, and communities to accommodate the unique needs of girls with autism. Tailored strategies, such as sensory-friendly environments and alternative communication methods, were discussed as ways to create a supportive atmosphere.

A Valuable Resource

This workshop is part of the forum’s ongoing commitment to empower parents with knowledge and tools. By shedding light on the nuanced needs of autistic individuals, the forum aims to foster greater understanding and inclusion.
